Prayer is a lifestyle and not a duty if you are a Christian. It may start as a duty but as knowledge and understanding increase it becomes an integral part of our daily activities to communicate to God. Recall, life is spiritual. People have focused more of their energies on their physical being than their spiritual being. But man is a spirit that lives in a body and has a soul according to the Bible. Thus, the spirit of man needs constant communication with its Source. It is akin to an iPhone that must remain connected to the apple store to receive information and new upgrades to function optimally. Without that connection the iPhone soon stop working optimally. How connected are you to your source?
Prayer is the act of talking to a God that we cannot see, acknowledging our relationship with him, worship, and make petition or requests to him. When the lesser builds a relationship with one who is higher in capacity, knowledge, and personality the lesser benefits tremendously. Likewise, when we communicate to God we are blessed. The goal of prayer is primarily to communicate and worship and secondarily to intercedes and make petitions. The more you focus your prayer on communicating and worshiping God, the more you know and walk in his plans for you and the lesser your ‘give-me-give-me’ requests. Indeed, he wants to answer our requests, but God is building an army of Kings and priests that know and exercise their rights on the earth and not an untrained mob.
Why? This was always the original plan. To extend the dominion of heaven to the earth. To raise children that act, speak, create, dominate and thrive like their King and to eventually pass judgement of Satan’s spiritual army of co-rebels who for eons have sort to destroy man and God’s creations. His dream can only be achieved by his kids that maintain and build a lifestyle of communication with the Father. Therefore, Jesus said, “Men ought always to pray and not to faint” (Luke 18:1).
No matter where you are in your relationship with God, you can develop it further today by talking to God and building your knowledge of him through your study of the word of God. Start daily predetermined talking sessions where you talk to God referentially and with an expectation that he hears you. When you pray also listen for God’s voice as he also communicates to your spirit. If you are looking for a template to guide your prayer. You can start with the Lord’s prayer as a template – Matthew 6:9-13. Here are other resources that will help you develop that daily habit. Note that the aim of these tools is to help you develop your knowledge of God and build your communication vocabulary so that you will be confident to pray on your own, using your own words without the aid of any book.
What if you are not born again? Well starting with the prayer of Salvation should be your first step.
