Being Born Again 101 – What did Jesus save us from?

Welcome to 2021. It’s a pregnant year. New dreams, visions, goals and plans. It’s our sincere hope and prayer that you thrive in 2021. But there is one question you must respond to if you have not. You see it all boils down to who Jesus is, what Jesus came to do or save us from. You must answer these questions personally, ignore them or reject them. Either way the consequences are eternal. If Jesus is who he truly is and came to save us then it’s worth considering what he came to save us from. After all no matter how long we live or how successfully live, we will all exit the scene someday. So while we embrace today and tomorrow with hope and great expectations let’s consider eternity for a while.

It is recorded that all men sinned and fell short of the glory of God – missed the mark. God created men to live righteously, tend the earth, innovate, and produce righteous acts. We are essentially fit for purpose beings that rebelled against the creator of the universe. All rebellions against legitimate sovereigns have consequences. The consequence of this rebellion is death – eternal separation from God.  Jesus Christ came to reconcile us to the Father – to save us from the consequences of our rebellion by paying for it and giving us his life freely (John 10:10).

Jesus saved us from eternal damnation through his death and justified all who believe in him by his resurrection (Romans 4:25). By this act he made it legally possible for all men (past, present and future) to have a relationship with the Father. The gifts of righteousness, the Holy Spirit and Eternal life are direct benefits of a restored relationship with the Father. It is because we have a relationship with God, have eternal live and are sealed by the Holy Spirit that those who believe in Jesus do not suffer death. Why? Citizens of haven do not suffer death – eternal separation from God.

By rejecting Jesus, men get what they want – pay for their rebellion.

Some scriptures:

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God… Romans 3:23,

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[a] Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23,

It was God [personally present] in Christ, reconciling and restoring the world to favor with Himself, not counting up and holding against [men] their trespasses [but cancelling them], and committing to us the message of reconciliation (of the restoration to favor). 2 Corinthians 5:19 AMPC

So, legally because of His sacrifice no one goes to hell but if you do not cash the check (grace-through-faith-in-Jesus-Christ) that Jesus gave the whole world through His death, you get to pay the wages of your sin yourself.

This debt is eternal. Why is it eternal? It is eternal because every sin has eternal consequences. That murder, lie, hate and several others unrighteous acts impacted series of people that creates unfathomable chain reactions of deaths, lies, crime and so many more. Being a just God, these acts require appropriate punishment. God not willing that any should perish, sent Jesus to make this payment because it’s a terrible thing to be eternally separated from God (John 3:16).

Jesus took the physical and the spiritual punishment for all men and for all eternity that all who believe in him need not perish. What He did before and on the cross was the physical part and that alone was unimaginably horrendous. What He did in hell is the one thing no one could (or can) do until Jesus.

Sadly, hell is not even the final destination. Hell, death, satan and his falling angels including those that will be willing( because they rejected Jesus) to go with him all end up in the lake of fire. It burns eternally. In the lake of fire, it is all fire in your eyes, mouth, nose and body. Contrary to popular culture there is no party, communal experience and relationships in the lake of fire or hell.

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Revelations 20:10–15

This is total separation from God. It was originally meant for the devil and his fallen angels. There is even a strong argument that satan tempts men so they are punished with him because (1) He is hoping for a reprieve (2) if no reprieve from God then to hurt God as much as he can since it is obvious that God loves man. But that is another subject (wink).

Real or not, the lake of fire is one place no one should go for eternity.

Why would you not want to be saved if you knew you are heading towards eternal separation from the source of life, love, nutrition, shelter, joy, peace, laughter, and everything ‘good’ you can ever imagine?
